Spiros Protopsaltis

Bio

Spiros Protopsaltis is an associate professor of education policy at the College of Education and Human Development and the Schar School of Policy and Government, and director of EdPolicyForward: The Center for Education Policy@George Mason University. He previously served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Higher Education and Student Financial Aid (2015-17) and Senior Policy Advisor (2013-15) for the US Department of Education. Before joining the Obama Administration, he served as the Senior Higher Education Advisor (2010-13) to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, and as the Senior Policy Advisor to Congressman Jared Polis of Colorado (2009-10). His primary research interests are federal education policy, higher education accountability, and best practices for improving student outcomes. Spiros has authored numerous policy papers for national organizations, including the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the Century Foundation, and Arnold Ventures, among others.

Spiros also spent several years in Colorado working on education policy at the state level in various positions, including as the president of the Center on Policy Entrepreneurship. He holds a PhD from the University of Colorado Denver, an MS from New School University, and a BA summa cum laude from Northeastern University.
