The Schar School of Policy and Government offers students the opportunity to take courses within our school in non-degree status. This option is suitable for those individuals who do not currently wish to pursue a degree, but are interested in taking graduate courses that are offered by the Schar School. To be eligible for non-degree graduate course work, students must have completed an undergraduate degree. Please note that international students seeking F-1 or J-1 visas or those holding F-1 or J-1 visas are not eligible to apply for non-degree study.
If a non-degree student decides to seek admission into degree status, he/she must reapply for admission using the Application for Graduate Study and submit all required credentials. If admitted into the degree program, a maximum of four classes taken in non-degree status may be applied towards a degree program.

- Unofficial transcripts from all previous institutions attended in the U.S. For international institutions, transcripts may be unofficial but should include cumulative transcripts, degree certificates, individual semester marksheets (if applicable), and diploma (if applicable).
The following credentials are required when submitting a non-degree application:
- Upload unofficial transcripts from all previous institutions attended in the U.S.
- TOEFL score or IELTS score is required for students whose have not earned a degree in the U.S., U.K., Australia, Canada (except Quebec), and New Zealand. **Please note that students submitting internet-based TOEFL exam results must earn a minimum total score of 88 and a minimum score of 20 on each individual exam section. The minimum IELTS total score is 6.5. Note: George Mason University’s code is 5827.
