Abstract
Over the past three decades, North Korea has managed to develop a sophisticated atomic weapons arsenal despite concerted efforts by the U.S. and international community to curb advancement of its nuclear program. While there is general agreement among the policy establishment as to the limits of U.S. coercive power vis-a-vis North Korea, there is less consensus on the regime’s nuclear motivations and the characteristics that define them. Through use of a qualitative research design, this study will identify main factors that shaped North Korea’s nuclear development decisions and strategies the Kim dynastic regime has implemented to advance its arsenal of atomic weapons.
