Spring 2022 New Master's Student Orientation

Be sure to complete these mandatory forms by Friday, February 4.

Welcome to the Schar School of Policy and Government!  New Master's Student Orientation will be a series of online and live modules that will be held from Tuesday, January 18 - Friday, January 21, 2022. The information provided during orientation will facilitate your smooth transition as you begin your graduate studies. Most modules will occur in real-time via Zoom with the exception of the Success in the Schar School module, which will be self-paced and can be viewed at any time. Be sure to complete the online module and associated forms by Friday, February 4.

Please note that Mason requires all students to be fully vaccinated (and to have uploaded their vaccine documentation to the Health Services Patient Portal) by January 5, 2022 unless they received an approved exemption. The deadline to receive a COVID-19 booster and upload your documentation is February 15, 2022. For more information, please visit the Student Health Services website here.


Below is the schedule of live orientation events. We ask that you register for each module individually in order to receive Zoom access. You are strongly encouraged to attend all live sessions.

Navigating Graduate Study hosted by Silva Morris & Paul Nooney

Meet your advisor! This session will provide you with the nuts and bolts needed to launch into your program and will highlight key academic policies and campus resources.

Career Planning Starts Now hosted by Duane Bradshaw & Brian Bar

Whether entering the workforce or seeking advancement, this session will share proven strategies for professional development and ways the Schar School's Career Development Office can serve as a resource.

Mason Campus Resources & Schar School Student Panel hosted by UL Arlington, SSAC, University Libraries, & Schar School Ambassadors

The Writing Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Student Support and Advocacy Center, and Mason’s Library are just some of the free resources that are available to students. Melissa Thierry & Sophie Gorshenin (UL Arlington), Shayna Marlowe (SSAC),  and Librarian Kim MacVaugh will share how to access these services and make the most of graduate student life. Then stay around to get all your lingering questions answered by a panel of current Schar School master's students.

Master’s Program Sessions hosted by Program Directors & Faculty

Exclusively for Schar School Master's & Certificate Students. Meet your Program Director and faculty teaching in your program who will provide an overview of your program requirements and the courses they teach.

Exclusively for Schar School Non-Degree Students. Meet your academic advisor, and learn more about how to successfully navigate being a non-degree student at the Schar School.
