Schar School Professor Steven Pearlstein attributes recent Congressional paralysis to what he refers to as the “delusions” of right-wing Republicans and left-wing Progressives that they can ultimately get their way if they refuse to budge or compromise as well as to the misguided belief of centrists from both parties that they will ultimately be able to achieve bipartisan compromise. Pearlstein argues that, while the nation’s voters do not support what they view as the extreme policies of populist Republicans and progressive Democrats, electoral realities also do not reward efforts by centrists to work across party lines to address problems.
